Biodiversity booklet of the Cabanes des Grands Reflets: nature and ponds
A guide to discover all the natural wealth of the ponds and forests of Les Grands Reflets, and to fully experience your stay as close as possible to the living.

🌿 Our biodiversity booklet: an immersion between ponds and forests at Les Grands Reflets
At the Cabanes des Grands Reflets, water and forest create a soothing landscape, almost timeless. To accompany this green break, a biodiversity booklet was designed by an ecologist as an invitation to observe, understand and experience nature in a different way.
Through its pages, it reveals the history of the site, the natural balances that play out there and The species that live there, often discreetly.
🌊 A land of ponds, shaped over centuries
The Grands Reflets domain is part of a region rich in ponds, linked together by a network of small streams.
Here, the Verchat pond is not isolated: it is part of a structured natural complex, connected to the Allaine river and the Bourbeuse stream.
Unlike other sites, this landscape is not recent. The booklet tells us that it has existed since the Middle Ages, and that it was already present in the 19th century, as evidenced by ancient maps.
This permanence gives the place a particular atmosphere: that ofA territory that has stood the test of time, while maintaining its natural identity.
🌿 An ideal setup for water... and life
It is no coincidence that there are so many ponds here.
The soil, composed of impermeable marl and sandstone, naturally retains rainwater and allows the formation of these bodies of water.
Historically, these ponds also had an essential function:
- clean up the land
- Irrigate agricultural plots
- promote human activities
Today, they offer a framework conducive to biodiversity and contemplation.
🌳 An ancient, living and nourishing forest
Around the ponds, the forest is omnipresent. And it's not from yesterday.
The booklet describes an ancient forest, already exploited by the inhabitants for their daily needs: firewood, pasture, harvesting...
Even today, it remains a rich and lively space, composed in particular of:
- Majestic beech trees
- charms recognizable by their fluted trunk
- oak trees, including American red oak
These woods offer a precious refuge to numerous species and contribute to the balance of the site.

🌸 Flora between water and undergrowth
Between the banks of the ponds and the forest edges, the vegetation unfolds discreetly.
The booklet highlights several characteristic plants :
- Buttercups, present in different forms depending on the environment
- The blood dogwood, loved by birds
- Angelica, which blossoms in summer at the water's edge
- The queen of the meadows and the eupatory chanvrine
These plants punctuate the seasons and contribute to the identity of the landscape.
⚠️ Fragile balances: invasive species
The booklet also raises awareness of an important issue: the presence of invasive exotic species
Among them:
- Himalayan balsamine
- The giant goldenrod
Very decorative, they develop rapidly and can disturb natural balances by competing with local species.
An essential reminder to better understand the dynamics of living things and the importance of maintaining local biodiversity.
🐟 A well present aquatic life... but discreet
Beneath the surface of the water, life is there.
Introduced several decades ago for fishing, carps are now very numerous in Étang Verchat.
They sometimes offer astonishing scenes, coming to meet visitors from the huts on the water.
But this strong presence also has an impact:
- few aquatic plants
- few invertebrates
- a limited diversity of waterbirds
A particular balance, which reminds us that each element influences the entire environment.

🌊 Near the water
You will be able to see:
- the gray heron, In search of fish
- The great egret
- The gray wagtail, elegant and always in motion
These species enjoy humid areas and calm shores.
🌲 In the woods
The forest is home to a great diversity of birds:
- Robin, chickadees, finches
- Great Spotted Woodpecker
- Nuthatch torchepot
Not to mention birds of prey such as the variable buzzard or the black kite, which can sometimes be observed by looking up.
🍄 An invisible world... but essential
The booklet also highlights a universe that is often unknown: that of mushrooms.
Present in large numbers, they play a fundamental role in the decomposition of organic matter and the recycling of nutrients.
A reminder that nature works in a network, where each element has its place.
🌍 Understand to better preserve
Throughout the pages, the biodiversity booklet invites you to wear a different look at what's around us.
Observe a plant, recognize a bird, understand the history of a landscape...
So many ways to reconnect with nature and to become aware of its richness.
🤍 A commitment at the heart of the experience
This booklet is part of a larger approach: make each stay a useful moment, both for yourself and for the territory.
At the Cabanes des Grands Reflets, this means:
- attention paid to natural balances

🌿 An invitation to slow down
During your stay, this booklet becomes much more than a simple guide.
It is an invitation to take time: to observe the reflections on the water, to listen to the birds at sunrise, to feel the forest that surrounds you.
